Jewish Morocco History

It is believed that the first Jews arrived to Morocco in the same period with the Phoenicians as traders or even together with them in the same ships about 900 years BC. Their arrival continues while trading between North Africa, Europe and Africa flourished in Morocco as the closest African country to Europe and facing the American continent. In the 15th century and fleding the massacres in Andalucia thousands of Jewish families were escaped to Morocco where they were welcomed all over Morocco in Tangier, Tetouan, Marrakech, Fez and many other towns and villages. After the end of World War II and when Israel was recognized as a state in 1947 lots of the Moroccan Jews left either to Israel for spiritual and economic purposes or seeking better life in wealthy Europe because of the economic difficulties Morocco faces when the French left it poor after given independence in 1956. Nowadays from 3000 to 10.000 Jews still live in Morocco either permanently or temporarily as second home sometimes a year.
