What is Marrakech Medina ?

The Medina of Marrakech is a reference to the old city of Marrakech built in the 11 century. It is surrounded with 19km of walls making a defensive ring with a number of gates to access from different sides. It is meant to protect from foreign invasions as from domestic tensions through the Moroccan history. The same concept is repeated in many other Moroccan cities like Fez, Tangier, Meknes, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Safi, Eljadida, Rabat, Casablanca, Azzemour…

The Marrakech Medina is an independent world with all the necessary architectural elements needed for a real city or town. It has just other Moroccan Medinas dozens of Mosques, Markets, religious schools and Medersas old universities, fruits and vegetable markets, craft markets, hammams, Foundouks, Bakeries, administrative buildings, Mellah Jewish quarters and in many even farming land within the walls to guarantee the sustainability of life in time of wars. A complicated water system was built to supply these Medinas with water.

This event is hosted by Medina Workshops to shed light and give answers about the Soul and Spirit of Moroccan Medinas in general and Marrakech old city in particular. Here we open the map of the red Marrakech Medina and talk its complicated architecture and how it grows with thin the wall from the century of its foundation to mid last century when it got saturated.
